How
Controllers Will Save You Money On Your Heating Bill
The
most overlooked component on most heating systems is the control system.
The majority of boilers are controlled by a high limit aquastat. On a
call for heat this control only allows the boiler to turn on and off to
maintain a 180 degree system water temperature. The majority of boilers
are controlled in this fashion, the boiler has no brain therefore it
doesn’t know if it’s 50 degrees outside or 0 degrees outside. If your
heating system operates in this fashion the single most important
control you can add to your heating system is an outdoor boiler reset
controller.
An outdoor boiler reset controller regulates your
heating system operating temperature based upon outdoor temperature.
This control becomes the “brain” for your heating system. When the
temperature outdoors is 50 degrees, your heating system operating
temperature does not need to be 180 degrees. In all likelihood you can
heat your home with 110 degree water. As the outdoor temperature drops
the outdoor boiler reset controller will increase your heating system
operating temperature accordingly. On a 30 degree day, you can heat the
average home with 140 degree water. When your heating system is
controlled in this fashion you can expect 20 to 30 percent annual fuel
savings.
Outdoor boiler reset controllers will work with any
boiler regardless of the fuel source, be it wood, pellets or fossil
fuels. Here at the farm, we’ve reduced our wood consumption by 20%.
That’s 4 cords of wood, which equals 600 gallons of fuel oil or 880
gallons of propane. With savings like this, our payback was less than
one heating season.
